This event will include a spectacular Middle Eastern dinner, a silent auction, and presentations by globally recognized speakers. Featured event are our guest speakers Hedy Epstein, holocaust survivor and human rights activist, Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights attorney, and Ann Wright former army colonel, one of three high ranking officials of the US State Department who publically resigned in protest to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and peacemaker par excellent! Host and Producer of WDHT TV “Community Connection” and “Off the Cuff” Siham Awada Jaafar, will be the Event Emcee.
Also included will be an awards ceremony. Each year Michigan Peace Team recognizes organizations and individuals who demonstrate outstanding effort and creativity in the work of nonviolence and peacemaking. We are delighted to announce the recipients of MPT’s 2012 Signature Event Award:
Activist Award - Women's International League for Peace and Freedom-Michigan
The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom works to achieve through peaceful means world disarmament, full rights for women, racial and economic justice, an end to all forms of violence, and to establish those political, social, and psychological conditions which can assure peace, freedom, and justice for all..
Organizational Award - Marygrove College Masters in Social Justice Program
The Marygrove College Masters in Social Justice Program gives students the opportunity to become scholar-activists in the field of social justice. Graduates are skilled social justice advocates making a difference in their communities and beyond and the campus has become a center for peace, social justice and sustainability efforts and events.
Edward Said Scholar-Activist Award - Dr. Gloria House
Gloria House, Ph.D. is Professor of Humanities and African American Studies at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, and former Director of the African and African American Studies Program. Dr. House is also Associate Professor Emerita in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department of Wayne State University, where she was a member of the faculty for 27 years. During her career Dr. House has won distinction as an excellent teacher, a pioneer in comparative cultural studies, and a leader for more equitable treatment of minority students, staff and faculty. Dr. House is an accomplished and widely published poet. Since the 1960’s, when she worked as a student in the Southern civil rights movement (field secretary in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in Lowndes County, Ala.), Dr. House has been actively engaged in African American community development and Third World solidarity causes.Their nonviolent example inspires many throughout Palestine and around the planet and the movement grows.
Rachel Corrie Award - Palestinian Freedom Riders
Drawing inspiration from the nonviolent tactics of the American civil rights movement to desegregate public transportation, six Palestinian Freedom Riders boarded an Israeli commuter bus linking Jewish settlements in the West Bank to Jerusalem. For their courageous action, the Freedom Riders in the West Bank were met with violent arrest.
